Mathematics at St Peter and St Paul
At St Peter & St Paul, we have high expectations of every child who enters our doors. We believe they can achieve and are committed to closing the attainment gap. Our expectation is that the majority of pupils will progress ‘through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace.’ Ofsted Handbook September 2015.
From September 2017, Years 1 through 4 are using ‘Inspire Maths’ to embed mastery of mathematics skills. Years 5 and 6 will continue their program of study as they prepare for SATs. Inspire will roll out to year 5 in 2018 and year 6 in 2019, becoming a school-wide programme that provides everything needed to support mastery of teaching and learning.
Inspire Maths is based on the leading Singapore Maths series My Pals are Here, used in 100% of Singapore’s state primary schools. It works by using accessible pupil textbooks to introduce concepts in a highly scaffolded way, enabling all children to develop critical thinking skills, make mathematical connections and become confident mathematicians.
It correlates to the UK National Curriculum and pushes children further in their understanding, reasoning and practical application of mathematical skills. It is one of only 2 schemes of work approved by the DfE and NCETM, Inspire is a sustained and consistent scheme with a carefully designed spiral progression and an emphasis on a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach.
We want all children at St Peter & St Paul to receive a high-quality mathematics education which ensures they are fluent in the fundamental skills and can apply these skills in problem solving through reasoning. In addition, we want students to enjoy the puzzles and patterns presented in mathematics as they gain an appreciation of the skills they’ve acquired.
