At the end of Reception, the class teacher makes a final judgement, based on going assessments that have been carried out over their time in the Early Years. Using all their evidence, they finally assess each child across seven areas, which are submitted to the Local Authority in June.
The Good Level of Development (GLD) is gained by achieving the expected level (2) in the three Prime Areas: Personal, Social, Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and Language. They must also achieve expected (2) in Literacy and Numeracy.

Phonics Screening
At the end of Year One, children are screened to assess if their level of understanding of Phonics. This is an assessment usually carried out by the class teacher, using a test created by the Standard and Testing Agency.

Key Stage One
At the end of Year Two, children undertake several test papers to assess their progress in Reading, Spelling and Grammar and Maths. Class teachers assess the children’s writing using samples from across the year’s work. The teacher then, using ongoing assessment and the test results, will form the children’s assessed level. These levels are then submitted to the Local Authority.
